Western Australia is one of the toughest environments in the country for exterior paint. Intense year-round UV, scorching summer surface temperatures, coastal salt spray and sharp seasonal swings all conspire to break down coatings that would last comfortably in a milder climate. Choosing the right system - and applying it properly - is what determines whether your repaint lasts three years or twelve.
UV resistance is non-negotiable
Perth's UV index sits high for much of the year, and UV is what fades colour and degrades the binder that holds paint together. Premium 100% acrylic exterior systems are engineered with UV-stable resins and pigments that hold colour and flexibility far longer than budget paints. On dark colours especially, UV stability is critical - cheap dark coatings fade and chalk fast.
Heat and surface temperature
It's not the air temperature that causes problems so much as the surface temperature - a west-facing wall in February can be far hotter than the day's forecast. Quality exterior paints tolerate application and curing in heat better, but technique matters just as much: a good painter avoids coating walls in direct peak-heat sun, which is a leading cause of premature failure.
Coastal homes need more
If you're near the coast - think Fremantle, Cottesloe or Mosman Park - salt-laden air accelerates corrosion and coating breakdown. Coastal-grade exterior systems and proper treatment of any metal elements (gutters, fascias, fixings) are essential. Skipping this is a common reason beachside repaints fail early.
